What's The Deal-With Card Games? Thursday, November 30, 2006 A standard deck of cards has 54 cards. Thirteen are spades. Thirteen are hearts. Thirteen are diamonds. Thirteen are clubs. The two remaining cards are Jokers. Not many simple card games use the Jokers but you will still want to keep them for more advanced play. Spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs are called suits. In each suit the cards are numbered from two thru ten. The next three cards are called face cards and are the Jack, Queen and King with the King being highest. The final card is the Ace. Value for this card may be one or eleven depending on the game. In most decks hearts and diamonds are red and spades and clubs are black, but this may vary in novelty decks. Pictures on the backs of cards also vary. Before you begin any card game you must first shuffle your deck of cards. Remember to remove the jokers unless the game requires their use. There are several ways to shuffle a deck of cards. The Pile-shuffle: just spread the cards face down on the table and mix them around. This is best for younger players who have small hands. Just make sure when you gather the cards back up to deal that they all face the same direction. The Cut-shuffle: hold the deck in one hand. Using the other hand, lift off a few cards and carefully push them back into the deck. Repeat this action several times. The Flutter-shuffle: hold half of the deck flat in each hand. Use your thumbs to bend and flutter the two halves together into each other. Repeat two or three times. Now you are ready to deal the cards. If you are the dealer you will give a card facedown to each player, starting on your left and ending with yourself. Always deal from the top of the deck. The number of cards given to each player will depend on the game you have selected. Usually 5-7cards, but sometimes the whole deck is dealt. Once they have received their cards, or hand, most players pick up their pile and slide them around in a half circle, or fan shape. Be careful not to let other players see your cards! Now let's talk about some simple card games that everyone can play. GO FISH is played with one deck of cards, minus the jokers, and 3-5 players. The object of the game is to get as many pairs as possible. You will be "fishing" from other players' hands for matching cards. First the dealer deals 5 cards (facedown) to each player. The left over cards are placed in a stack (facedown) in the middle of the table. Each player picks up their hand and checks it for pairs. A pair is two cards of the same value and color, like two red fives or two black kings. If a player has a pair they remove it from their hand and place it on the table in front of them. If they do not have a pair they must wait for their turn to "go fish". The dealer goes first by picking another player and asking that player if they have a card that matches one the "asker" already has. If the player being asked has that card they must hand it over and the player receiving the match places the pair down in front of them. Then they may take another turn asking another player for another card that they need, until they do not get a match. If the Player asks for a card that the other player does not have they are told to "Go fish!" Then the player doing the asking must draw a card from the stack of cards in the middle of the table and his or her turn end and the next player gets to ask someone for a card. Remember each player can only ask for cards they already have, so it is important to listen and remember what each player asks for incase you pick that card from the pile. That way you know who to ask for a match. The game ends when any player runs out of cards. The player with the most pairs wins. CRAZY EIGHTS is played with one deck of cards, minus the jokers, and 2-4 players. Eight cards are dealt (facedown) to each player and the remaining cards are placed in a stack (facedown) in the middle of the table. The dealer takes the first card off the stack and places it face up in the middle of the table beside the stack. Players pick up their cards and hold them in a fan so that others can't see them. The dealer goes first. They must look at the card in the middle of the table and play one of their cards on top of it. The card they play must match that card-either the same number or the same suit. If they do not have a card that can be played they must draw a card from the stack in the middle of the table. They keep drawing card by card until they get a card they can play. The exception is any card that is an eight. If the player has an eight in their hand, or draws an eight from the pile, they may play it regardless of the card on the table. They may also change the suit of the card. For example, if they have an 8 of hearts they may lay it on the table and say, "this is an eight of spades." Thus the name CRAZY EIGHTS! If the middle stack runs out of cards before someone wins, the dealer may pick up the face up pile of cards, placing the top one face up on the table and shuffling the rest. These will be placed facedown for players to continue drawing from them. The first player to run out of cards wins! These are just two of many fun card games to play with friends and family. 4:52 PM Comments: Post a Comment << Home |
