Fun Toys for everyone, even Adults Monday, December 11, 2006 By Christina VanGinkel When I normally think of toy shopping, I think of children, but recently I have been associating toy shopping with the adults in my life, myself included. With the busy schedules and lifestyles, so many of us lead on any average day, a toy or two might be just the thing we need. Sure, we adults have toys, as in electronics and other expensive gear, but I am referring more along the lines of your typical toy. When my young grandson recently asked me what I wanted Santa to bring me this holiday season, before I could think twice, I told him I would really like a toy. A toy was a good idea he said, because then when he was at my house and he was bored from playing with his toys, he could borrow mine, and if I had a toy to share with him, he would share his with me! Oh, the knowledge in that brain of his. This conversation got me thinking about several people still on my holiday gift list that I would like to give a gift to, but had been bewildered when it came to actually thinking of something to give them. I had been leaning towards such mundane ideas as a nice pair of driving gloves, a box of chocolates, or maybe even a gift certificate to a local coffee shop. All of these would be very acceptable gifts, but at the same time, they all seemed to lack any spirit. Whereas a toy, if chosen with thought, could be the perfect gift for each one of them. With this new idea in place, I decided to take a bit of time and browse the toy sections of a few favorite online stores, to see if anything further sparked my interest in the spirit of holiday giving. I soon had more ideas than I ever imagined, and just had to narrow down the field for each person's perfect gift. What toys did I find that I thought would make good gifts for the few adults in my life that I had been stymied on ideas for this holiday season, beyond the old basic standbys of gloves and chocolates? Rubik's Cube A Rubik's Cube, classic, yet fun, and would not be out of place even in a household that is strictly adults. Rock'em Sock'em Robots Rock'em Sock'em Robots is yet another classic that would be fun for adults today. With the bit of nostalgia associated with these, they are as fun to play with today, as they were when they first came out back in the mid 1960's. When I mentioned giving a set of these as a gift to one of our friends, my husband had such an envious look on his face, I decided to order two so I could give him a set too! Labyrinth I have been fascinated by these toys since I was small, and recall my parents enjoying playing with the one us kids had just as much as we did. I am sure that adults today would be just as enamored with the brain-teasing puzzle that needs a high level of coordination to complete just as much as we all did back when. I even found a version that could be played on the computer, and I love it as much as I did the original wooden version, maybe even more, because once you manage to solve a level, there are more just waiting to be played. Either version would be good to give an overworked adult who spends too much time in their office doing nothing but work. Slingshot Flying Monkey I was first introduced to this toy when my youngest son won one as a reward for selling magazines through his elementary school a few years ago. The furry little monkey resembles a regular old stuffed toy and could easily sit innocently on a desk, or even a dashboard of a car. What unsuspecting individuals do not know is that this stuffed toy is really a slingshot! He even makes a great companion for shooting wadded up balls of paper into a makeshift hoop, a.k.a., garbage can. Toys really are the perfect gift, no matter the age of the recipient. Whether something new or nostalgic, toys are great stress relievers and just plain fun, so give some to friends, coworkers, and family this year, and keep the spirit of the season bright and cheery. 9:24 AM Comments: Post a Comment << Home |
